(June 23, 2006) … Today, Limos for Learning™, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is pleased to announce that it plans to expand its very successful reading incentive program to school districts throughout the upstate region of South Carolina, which include Anderson, Cherokee, Greenville, Oconee, Pickens and Spartanburg counties.
“Our main focus is the children of South Carolina,” said Betsy Ross, President and Founder of Limos for Learning™. “We want to help them become more proficient readers at an earlier age so they may become stronger students, stay in school, graduate and further their education.”
Limos for Learning™ is a motivational reading incentive program that increases the significance of reading at high standards among elementary school students. By working collaboratively with elementary schools, classroom teachers, volunteers, businesses and local and national celebrities to motivate students, elevate self-esteem and promote literacy, the organization’s goal is to reward those who meet or exceed the established criteria and put forth tremendous effort with the primary focus being achieving their reading goals.
In a recent study, South Carolina was determined to have the third highest adult illiteracy rate among adults in the United States. By expanding the program, Limos for Learning™ helps more children become more adept at reading and decreases the chances of illiteracy at a young age. “If we want to ensure a brighter future for South Carolinians, we must ensure our children are adequately prepared to compete in today’s highly competitive world,” Ross said. “Developing positive “can do” attitudes, reinforcing strong work ethics and reading proficiently help pave the road to success in school and in life.”
Since its inception in Laurens County two years ago, Limos for Learning™ has increased the number of students that participate from 12 to 8,800. In addition to schools in Laurens County, they have already added Georgetown, Horry, Marion, Marlboro and Saluda County school districts to their ever-growing list and have requests to implement the program in 11 other states.
“The response to our program and the positive outcomes has been overwhelming!” she said. “We have seen a dramatic rise in statewide participation from everyone involved and our hope is that everyone in the upstate and throughout South Carolina will become more involved in the learning process through participating in the program and helping gain the necessary funding. Yet, our main goal is to ensure that our children are adequately prepared for the future with the necessary education, most notably reading, skills that they will need throughout life.”
